Sometimes I wonder if I ought to move into management and leave software
development to be a hobby. But then I look back and recall all the managers
I've known over the years and how they never seem particularly happy.

Right now I am in much the same boat as you. I make a living from it, and I do
it in my spare time. There's something very comforting about the art and act of
programming, but this is different than the actual career of software
development. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I find myself really
enjoying working on my newsreader, maybe too much. I am almost afraid that when
I finish my newsreader that I will feel empty, so I put off that day. I've put
it off for years and years now because of this. Yet, at work I get somewhat
nervous if I am in a project that doesn't seem to be going anywhere. (That's
what was so nice about commercial software development, there was always a
deadline set in stone. You had short-term concrete feedback.)

This might sound odd, but to me leisure programming is a lot like creative
writing in the way it feels to do it. There's a certain zen quality to creating
a little universe with its own actors and actions.
