Not sure what you mean. I originally switched from VSS to StarTeam and didn't find anything in StarTeam that "went against" me. :-) In fact, there was a lot in VSS that made life pretty difficult for me. Not so with StarTeam- it made everything very easy to do.

Again, don't know what this refers to. It is easy to install and maintain in my experience. I use StarTeam Enterprise at work and Standard at home. Both were easy to install and easy to maintain. I've never had to restore from a backup because of a corrupted database etc. which is way better than Visual SourceSafe (got corrupted a few times).
I've also used PVCS and that had some nice features at the time, but it really seemed to compare more to VSS than StarTeam.
