I can't speak for John, but I enjoy immensely being a Developer by
profession. I feel like I get paid to indulge my hobby.

It can be a very stressful profession at times, and it is not uncommon
to have to work past the standard 9-5 hours, especially if there is a
looming deadline or a project that has just gone live.

I mainly use my personal programming time to extend my abilities in
technologies that I don't get to use professionally, such as ECO.

If you enjoy doing it in your spare time, chances are you'd end up
enjoying it as a profession too. The main difference will be that you
sometimes will have to do things using techniques or technologies you
wouldn't necessarily choose yourself.
