That used to the hard part for me years ago, but lately I find myself feeling
more and more agnostic about "better technology". Other factors seem more
important to me, like the fact that there seems to be far less stability,
security and upward mobility in software development than in many other
professions. It seems that programming caps out at the team lead level, and
most firms seem to grab project managers and other higher positions from
outside of the software development personnel pool.
I've seen a number of highly experienced programmers simply leave the
profession to do something totally unrelated because software development as a
career did not seem to lead anywhere as far as they could see. This is a huge
cost to society, because all that skill then is lost to the economy, but it is
a cost that derives from the way businesses view software development and
unless you talk about some kind of govt intrusion into hiring/firing/promotion
practices I don't really see any reason to expect that this will change any
time soon. Type-A personalities that want to "rise to the top" get weeded out
of the profession after a decade or often even less time.
