I first saw these when Blake Stone showed me Apple's Application
Designer on his Mac notebook back in 2000.

After seeing it and how cool it was I borrowed a Mac from the JBuilder
Team and I started working on it while I was still on the Kylix team.
It was kinda cool because at that time I had a Mac, a Linux box and a
Windows box all running in my office and I was switching back and forth
all day.

Since it wasn't my primary responsibilty I only worked on it in spurts
whenever I got a chance. I don't think anyone at the time really
thought how cool guidelines would be.

It wasn't easy. Maybe because of the design I had but I was
implementing it as part of the Form Designer and I really didn't
understand well how the form designer really worked. I finally got the
guidelines painting properly but I never did finish so that the
controls would snap to the line before I left Borland.

I remember showing Allen and Chuck on day after I got the lines painted
and they could see a protoype working. They thought it was a cool idea
and encouraged me to continue with it.

Unfortuantely I didn't finish but if I had we could have had guideline
support in D7 3 years before Microsoft. :-)

I am almost 100% certain that whoever added the current guideline
support went with a totally different implementation than I did but I
am glad they did. I really love the idea.
