Re: How will Borland respond to the free VB 2005 Express Edition?

Yep. Have it installed. Played with it a bit. Not real impressed.

So what are you saying? That if Borland does not give away their tools
developers would choose Java over Delphi? I doubt that assumption is
correct. Sun is giving away their tools because they have not yet
figured out how to make money out of them or Java, for that matter.

So, I fail to see your point. I seriously doubt that a developer is
going to choose Java, with all of it's complexity just because they can
get the development tools for free. Perhaps a hobbiest or student would
take this approach, but professional developers will use the best tool
for the job, period. Do I see a problem with Borland giving away a
limited personal edition of Delphi? No, not at all. I just don't view
the absence of that as being doomsday for Borland.

and a small FYI .. Yes, I am aware they are giving their tools away
these days not to mention Solaris for 486. I have been a member of
the Sun Developer Network since Java was first released. In fact there
were so few Java developers at that time who had actually shipped an
application that they published a bound book with a list of solutions
written in Java, which I was in. I even the Early Access version of
the Java Creator Studio 2 installed. While I have always played with
Java as a matter of self-education, I don't do any commercial Java
development these days. I also purchase choose to support Borland by
purchasing their tools.
