I agree, though I think the only good training comes from years of on-the-job
experience. A competent, experienced programmer will be far more productive
than a fresh grad. Also, "self-taught" doesn't mean untrained. Some of the best
programmers I've ever known were self-taught.
I think Joel does have a point about recursion though. If a "programmer"
doesn't understand recursion, or where and when to use it, it is unlikely that
he is very good for much else either.
