Re: My rant about the "throw out delphi and re-write it in C#" crowd.

Little comment (I mostly agree with you)

When you go to amazon or other book store you will find a lot of books
related to C# (based on VS of course), VB.NET or C++ (VS-based)

But I know only one book for Delphi.NET for last 3 years and no one book for
Delphi2005 or Delphi2006.

There are lot of books for Delphi7, but it seems to be obsolete for years,
so it seems like Delphi is dead after D7 out.

I know it is not true..but not for young people who only study programming.

I think the problem is that Borland is deathly afraid to criticize
Microsoft in its ads. This wasn't always the case. Some of the ads
fired across the bow of the Microsoft C++ products were AWESOME.
Borland was fearless in putting itself out there and asking developers
to compare the products head to head.

Nowadays, Borland is (I believe) afraid to annoy Microsoft in any way,
and as a result they've lost their 'edge' that brought out the somewhat
'maverick' nature of programmers who didn't want to be dictated to
about what tools to use. Programmers traditionally defied conventional
wisdom and went with whatever the most kick-ass tool was. Now it seems
more and more of them just adopt the 'safe' position of using
Microsoft, and now they are just like the people they used to mock
(e.g. managers who insisted upon buying IBM because it was 'safe').

Borland needs to renew its appeal to the desire to have the best
technical tools that make them the most productive, and not be afraid
to blast Microsoft in the ad press pointing out the abandonment of VB6
programmers, the lack of any Win32 solutions, the lack of proper
modeling, and other issues.

Borland is playing defense and letting Microsoft utterly dictate the
rules of the competitive playing field, and THAT, more than anything,
is why people I run into want to know whatever happened to Borland, and
don't know about what BDS does, and so on. You can't grow a business
if you hide in your hole and try really hard not to 'offend' anyone
with aggressive marketing.

Hi John,

Well, not exactly. I know there is some advertising, but nothing on
the level of what MS does. I've limited my magazine reading to Info
World and PC World. Almost every issue has a Visual Studio ad. I
don't recall seeing a Delphi ad in those for years. I realize that
Borland doesn't have MS's budget, but I used to see Borland's ads all
the time. Not too mention product reviews in those magazines as
well. ( Maybe I should go back to writing reviews :) )

Sometimes I feel like Rodney Dangerfield... ;-/

Yeah, why is that? Delphi's like the best kept secret on the
planet.

I think we're talking about 2 different things. It seems you're
implying I said we don't advertise Delphi, and that's not true, nor
is it what I meant. I'm saying we don't advertise the points Randy
made in his blog post, and that IS true.
