Re: A little conspiracy theory (extended and revised)

Very compelling points. I think you might have something there.

Where the line of thought evolves from is the extended conversations I had
here with Brian Moelk, who took the position that Delphi was dispensible to
Borland, while I argued its criticality to Borland's complete ALM/SDO
solution.

From a technical standpoint I still think I was right: the split damages
both sides. But in the larger context I'll have to concede that Brian turned
out to be correct--Borland doesn't see the Dev tools lines as central to its
business, which is ultimately what Brian was arguing. Clearly. he was right.

That said, the effort to understand Borland management's current thinking
has to start with the assumption of that they're doing what's best for
Borland, conceived as an ALM/SDO vendor. And from that perspective, selling
the IDE lines as a matter of pruning the company itself for outright sale
makes the most sense to me. It sharpens Borland's focus and capabilities on
the areas that MS, IBM, Oracle, BEA, or some other bigboy enterprise player
would be most interested in buying, while eliminating the 'problem' that the
IDE lines would represent for most of those companies.

Time will tell. For right now it's Brian 1, bob 0
