Help was badly broken in Delphi 2005. It's still broken in Delphi 2006.
I'd say it was lacking in content and not badly broken. It's a problem that we raise internally as well. I'm hoping that with the spin out that this is one area in which we can make some marked improvement.
OT: How long did it take before we got a version of C++ Builder that
barely works? V6. I've tried to report errors on that one but gave up
as the examples are too complex.
OT: How long did it take before we got a version of Kylix that started
working properly? V3. And even then I found problems in CLX itself.
This is just beating a dead horse.
Delphi was a rock solid product. Then Delphi 2005 came along. I bought
it without thinking. Boy was I disappointed. What happened?
Agreed, Delphi 2005 was not a product anyone on our team was proud of shipping. BDS 2006 however is a product that I think nearly everyone is proud to have shipped.
I have reported them. But what's the point?
Well, you have a chance of seeing them get fixed which I don't think is pointless but that's just me.
Two reasons for my
pessimism - one is to do with the sale of the IDE, the other is that
you let broken help ride between two major versions of Delphi.
FWIW, I'd guess that a very large majority of the team feels we're better off being spun out than staying part of Borland. In fact, it's a topic that's been discussed internally for years now. Delphi has been stifled inside Borland for too long and the spin out comes as an opportunity for us to shed the fact that the company has been moving away from it's Delphi customer base for a long time.
I think/hope that with BDS 2006, which I consider a quality release, we're left in a good position to transition to a company that can be more focused on making it's customers happy. I look forward to the opportunity.
