I am wondering what the general concensis is what would be the best
programming languages to learn to help improve my career, salary and to
generally improve my overall confidence in the languages I use as a
programmer.

I've been wondering this myself. In my case, the question is whether I
reinvigorate my C++ skills or dive into C#. Based on my experience of the
last few years, I feel pretty confident that my Delphi skills are good
enough to ensure that if there are still jobs doing Delphi that I am very
well-situated to get them, so I really ought to widen my skillbase. To this
end, I did an interesting search on dice.com. I did searches on Delphi, C++
and C# and noted the number of matches. Delphi came up with a ludicrously
small number, something like 150. C# had a healthy 4500 or so, IIRC. Pretty
good, I thought. But it was C++ that really carried the day, at a whopping
7500. So, it looks to me like if I wanted to maximize my employability, I'd
best reinvogortate my C++ skills.

As an interesting and ironic aside, I read just a few minutes ago that 80%
of all business transactions go through code written in COBOL.

Ironic, in light of some recent threads here.
