as a whole. In essence, it appears to me that the way most businesses are
run precludes good software development, so much so that actual coding is
probably less than 5% of the total effort it takes to produce software.
Granted, you are safely ignoring the good places a whole... I'd like to
suggest you open your eyes a little. In my 16 years programming (at more
places than I can count) I've never worked somewhere where the vast majority
of coders where coding less than 90% of their time. I'll include designing
with that figure because we often code and design simulataneosly or or
designing doesn't long drawn out meeting but rather chicken scratches on
paper and some thinking and reasoning then then implementing. The other 10%
is meetings or goofing off. Okay, perhaps that's 30% of the time. In any
case... And for the past 10 years I've only worked places that have more
than 30 programmers and between 300 and 12,000 employees and working on
large (tens of thousands of users, often simulataneously for 8 hours a day)
enterprise solutions, and some places where software is the purpose for the
companies existance, but other places where it is just a function of the IT
department for a non IT business (steel distribution, for example).
Thanks,
Shawn
