Re: Where4s Delphi going?

First, I don't agree with your account of the state of the Delphi IDE.
As people who are using it have pointed out, Delphi 2006 is a joy to
use. I use it daily and find it very productive. If you don't trust
these opinions, just look at the scarcity of legitimate complaints
(but there are some). Even the wild and unfounded complaints are way
down, and that's saying something for non-tech. There are still
problems, but they are minor (in my experience on 3 separate systems)
and another patch is in the works. Life is good.

"joy to use"?

I find it more annoying than a joy to use. It feels a little sluggish
compared to D7. I've already switched the 'embedded' designer off. The
alignment feature works when designing a form but if you try to modify
a form, tough, you can't get it to align like it did the first time. I
switched that off pretty quickly. Hit F1 on a variable, sorry not
working. Hit F1 on a type, you might be lucky. Help on D2006 has gone
backwards.

And then comes David I's post on Feb 8. Wow. Even after the Coates
thing, this was a bit of a shock. It was a very clear and candid
statement, followed up by a lot more clear and candid comments from
Borland staff on their intentions and how they feel about the whole
thing. And these comments were pretty universally positive. Even
enthusiastic. I seriously doubt that this is company mandated
enthusiasm (and anyone who thinks it is hasn't met some of these
people), so they genuinely think there's an up side. Cool.

For all the positive stuff Delphi is being sold off by Borland. Who
knows what that might bring. I'd say the future is (even more)
uncertain. Who's buying Delphi? Unknown. What's the plan? There's a
roadmap but you can bet it will change when the new owners take over.
