Did Borland honestly expect database manufacturers to come running
after them and start developing dbExpress stuff?

Connectivity is not just the dbExpress driver. It also requires the
vendor to have connectivity support for the platform. MS have
connectivity support on Windows, ie the MSSQL client. MS don't support
connectivity from Linux.
