Seems to me that most of its attempts in the last decade to dominate have
not been the unqualified success you may think I can't think of any new
products in the last decade that are dominating. There are some with a
substantial share of the market, but none that rule the market in the way
that Windows and Office do. And since selling the OS is how they make a
large portion of their profits, I think the author is right.

Well maybe dominate isn't the right word, but they have so many new streams
of revenue. Take only 1 product as an example: Sharepoint. Some critics
said that nobody would use Sharepoint, yet that 1 product alone is scheduled
to bring in $400 million in revenue. That's more money than Borland makes
for all its products. And these so-called "threats" to Microsoft haven't
exactly been a success. The author claims that nobody would need windows if
a product written in Java would run on any platform. Well first of all that
doesn't make sense beause Windows would still be one of those platforms.
But moreover, what Java applications have taken over the desktop in the 12
years (yes, 12 years) that Java has had a chance to upseed Microsoft? Again
I'm talking about the desktop.
