Re: There is no .NET in Vista Code?

But those problems you have identified are still going to
be there as we go forward - .NET is just adding another one
on top of those things.

Yes, but, no, but - .NET also removes a whole layer whether it be the VCL,
MFC or whatever framework has come between your app and the OS in the past.

Unfortunately, neither of us have any evidence that
this will ever be the case. Why isn't it "baked in" to
Vista already ?

I thought Vista was not due out until Jan 2007 - who knows what it will
eventualy contain? If Vista doesn't contained .NET code itself does not mean
that .NET won't come pre-installed with Vista.

When was it first released again, back
in 2000 ? Is it still not "mature" enough (whatever that
really means) six years later ?

Not necessarily. The first copy of Windows I got my hands on was 1.0 in
1985. I didn't start using it as a platform until Win 3.1 in 1991, and
ddin't start deploying software for it until Win95 in 1995. (I might be a
year or two out - don't take the dates to literally) These things take time.

Even MS Word took five years to initially get right

I still perceive the current state of .NET as being primarily made
available for developers to finish off their products and have an
opportunity for real field testing.

After /six/ years that is the best that can be said of it ? :-P

I'd rather that than they get locked in something prematurely that is not
quite right. It's too late then to go back.

If you were releasing a brand new app today would you worry too
much about supporting Win95, Win98 or ME?

No, I'd be more worried about Windows 2000 and, especially, XP -
or are these just legacy OS choices with a small cult following ? :-P

At least we agree on this point then - it is not worth targeting obsolete
versions. .

IMO, you would only accept that if you let them get away with
calling v1.1 a "minor" upgrade - 2 to 3 years is closer in my
reckoning. Jeez, v2.0 is fresh out of the womb and some folk
are already salivating over features offered by .NET 3.0. :-)

I've suffered 8 updates in 11 years since Delphi 1.0 with the VCL. (Make
that about 16 or more if you include the major indispensable mid-version
updates to v4, v5, v7, D2005) Fortunately I never had to use Borland's
reporting components. What was it? ReportSmith, QuickReports, RaveReports
and now Crystal Reports!

An update only once every 2-3 years sounds like pure luxury to me.
