But thats a whole different story and not at all about ILMERGE.

I don't think so. I think it will be a pretty moot point when the
framework ships with an OS, but discussion of linking in general will
still be relevant. There was talk early on about not supporting
linking, but such support is becoming increasingly official, and the
technical barriers are almost entirely solved.

Me thinks you may be reading tea leaves when you say, "...but such support

ILMERGE isn't a recent development, IIRC it has been available for almost
three years as a project of Microsoft Research and FAIK it's status hasn't
changed except the current NET 2.0 version is now made available on the MS
Download site while prior versions were only available as a download for the
MS Research site. For someone having problems you are referred to a specific
persons email address and for more details to the ILMERGE site at Microsoft
Research. I can't read anything in this that leads me to conclude "is
becoming increasingly official". Interestingly one reference at the MS
Research site says this, "Another free GUI has been written by Mauro
Venturini that specifically targets and integrates with Borland Delphi for
..NET." but the writer then hastens to add that he hasn't looked at it that
GUI.

As I said before, IMO ILMERGE is a whole different story from linking parts
of the framework into one's app and I do fully agree with Chris Burrows when
he said in reference to NGen, "Yes - that was me, but I'm happy to be proven
wrong. Linking parts of the framework into your app goes against the whole
philosophy of .NET. Precompiling using ngen is also not the norm. It should
only be done for special cases by those who really understand what they are
doing - and that doesn't include me yet."
