... would be a good comprimise for Borland... activate once, issue the key
that I can back up, then I can re-install as many times as I want. Not
saying install on as many computers as I want,
It's exactly how you can do right know
http://delphi.wikicities.com/wiki/Limiting_Installation_Count_Increments
Not really... first, its locked to the username of the machine. For me
that's not terribly important, but between machines (when I update the PC),
I sometimes might use a different username. Second, notice the disclaimer
at the bottom of the page:
"NOTE: This only works on a system with the same hardware because this
activation information is specific to hardware.".
This means that if I upgrade my PC or get a new one altogether, that I must
call up Borland to get a new activation. What if I want to build and test
on my own dual-core AMD 64 at home and on a dual core pentium with
hyperthreading? I might need to run the debugger on each... while I'm one
user and no one else at my home use my computers, my wife has her own...
this means I can't. Sometimes I remove the hard disk and put in others.
USB chains, I'm always changing my USB configuration. I'm always updating
my RAM. I'm always updating my sound cards and video cards. About every
12-18 months I get a new computer entirely. Activation schemes like this
not only invonvenience me greatly, but piss me off... and thus, I will NEVER
(except Microsoft software) purchase or use a software product that does
this to me. I'm not in the habbit of wasting my money and my time to prove
I'm the rightly licensee of a product... and don't want to be disadvantaged
in 3 years from now when company/vendor no longer exists or supports the
product. I still use 10 year old software and even older, and in 10 years,
I'd like to use 10 year old software if I want. Activation schemse like
this simply just don't work well for me in the long run.
Thanks,
Shawn
