Re: Borland Leaves Delphi ???

have enough developers to do it on their own. Even if they buy these
companies, a lot of work will be
needed to integrate them all. So the
difference in time might not be that big.

They get more than features in the deal - they get an
expanded customer base within their targeted market
segment(s).

That is true. Still it's a unpredictable mass, and they might move to
something else when all these changes have been made. There are two factor
here that should be valuable when buying a company. The first is how mutch
work there will be for the customer base to move over to another product,
the other one is the elimination of an opponent in the market (excuse my bad
english).

If it's very easy (little overall costs) for the customers to move to
another product, then this customer base is very fluid. If there are many
opponents in this market, then eliminating one opponent will not give that
mutch of an advantage. Since I don't know anything about the companies
Borland wish to aquire, I'll leave it there. It might give them good impact
on the ALM section, and it might not.

But I know, moving away from BDS will make them weak in other ways. And
don't tell that focus on one market is what makes them strong, that's
bullshit. Microsoft, Apple or any other huge company will be a proof of the
opposite. With a wide market you get more stability, and more options and
power by the possibilities to combine parts and move between the sections as
they evolve. It is also possible to use sections with little income to give
benefits for other sections, because there might be some connection for the
customer.

Let's look at .NET. I think that Microsoft today have used more money on
..NET development and VS etc. than they got back yet. Still doing this will
have good impact on their web server share and database server share.
Focusing marketing on .NET will give IIS, Microsoft SQL Server etc. some big
advantages. So you see, .NET gives benefits for Microsofts other sections.
If they only focused on OS development, they would be a small company today
(or maybe not existing anymore)..
