Funnily enough, I agree with that somewhat but my own
cross-platform targetting argument is slightly different
from the multiple-platform argument. For example, the type
of applications that I would want to create for Linux
are generally different from the ones that I would want
to create for Windows but I would still like to be able
to write both of them from a single, excellent Windows
based IDE, and with common framework / library code.

I wouldn't necessarily need the applications in question
to be available on the other platform (as the desktop and
server markets currently stand, anyway).

That has definitely been a common problem in the past but
it's not cast in stone, IMO. It's all about the implementation.

I would disagree - it's a general problem, rather than anything particularly to do with any implementation. Some platforms are

If we are talking about Linux \ Windows \ Mac for general
application development then I personally would assess
that these platforms /are/ close enough in capabilities that
the problems would be far from insurmountable. Indeed, the
way in which I think that DevCo should implement such a
capability (i.e. the provision of a bespoke native compiler
for each target platform) would help counteract those ugly
old one-size-fits-none problems you alluded to (and many
of us dislike about, say, Java).

OTOH, if you are talking about deploying to hand-held
devices and suchlike, then I would certainly agree about
those differences being too great for useful cross-platform
provision (though not from creation from single IDE...)
and bow to your greater knowledge on the subject :-)
