I think it has been a prevalent feeling in the industry
over recent years that the latest Office versions have
inevitably set the tone for the UI look in most business
applications of the era. I don't know if the new WPF era
will change that in time but the next iteration of this
project will be playing safe, I feel, by sticking close
to Office.
Agreed. It seems like whenever MS puts out a new look&feel in Office, in
general your application feels "dated" if it doesn't follow the same trend.
Annoying when you think about it (that such a superficial aspect of the
application can somehow make the functionality dated) but perception is
often times more important than functionality.
IMHO, it's the main reason I use DevExpress products, they made it easy to
make my apps look like the current version of Office (see
http://www.sysonyx.com/products/xmldig for some screenshots of what I mean).
I'm *very* apprehensive of using the new "ribbon" UI, since it's throwing
years of standard layouts out the window, but my guess is DevExpress will be
providing the tools to accomplish this UI.
