"Very long time" in this industry could mean almost anything, including
a very short time. Also, while I agree that Win32 will be around for
quite some time, that does not mean that accessing the API outside of
.Net will be supported for a "very long time". I think many are
forgetting that MS has said publically that, at some point, access to
the Windows API will only be available via .Net.
Microsoft has actually been pretty good at supporting legacy
software as long as it isn't too intrusive. Well behaved
DOS, Win3.1 and Win95 applications all run fine under
Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. The only legacy support
they have dropped is for OS/2 text mode applications
circa OS/2 1.2.
Microsoft itself is still pumping out Win32 applications
and they will be runnable on Microsoft operating systems
for decades to come.
