Many large sites manage to use php under high load, so, Im curious.

No, the many of the older skills of small foot prints and tweaking
every last nano second out of it is long gone.

I don't really understand the code here, but you seem to be hitting a threshold behaviour where you are constantly running out of space in the per CPU caches. ...
