If DevCo was really smart, I would forget trying to compete in well rounded
circles and start offering something new. No, I would not drop my current
revenue streams, but face it folks, the future is not with the past.
A Killer IDE, IMHO, would be an Ajax IDE that was as RAD as Delphi/BCB but
which could be used with Java or NET. That would give them potential to a
very LARGE market, one that currently has little to no coverage at all.
Get the JUMP on all COMPETITORS, NOW. DO NOT WAIT FOR MS, Sun, or Eclipse to
come out with something; --- OWN the market by being first and being the
best. To me, these markets are much more open and pervasive than Delphi,
BCB, or Java IDEs.
Like it or not Ajax is the Application platform of the future. It works,
gives a server side delivery model, and can mimic Desktop GUI operations.
Tools are in short supply right now and this is going to be a huge market
for someone to make high quality RAD tools for. One suggestion DevCo, DO
NOT PRICE IT TOO HIGH!! You stand to lose big, if you try to do this with a
higher price than say 100.00-300.00 per copy. Price it low enough and you
can own this market. Make it a subscription price per year and enjoy
residual income.
Please note I am not saying that Borland should not support nor enhance the
current toolsets, nor am I suggesting abandoning them. But living in the
past will eventually make you a company of the past.
