Mat,
I take it that by "Open Source systems" Dvorak means Java, Eclipse, PHP,
Ruby, etc.
..NET is new. A lot of companies have invested heavily in Java and other
technologies. Honestly, they aren't going to just say... "Opps... we make a
mistake." and switch to .NET. They are going to look at the cost (training,
programmers, time, etc.) and benefits of switching to .NET and make a
choice. For existing stuff, is there any benefit of switching to .NET today?
Rarely. However, for new projects .NET (at least for the web) is a good
business case. One which will likely get even easier to make in the future
as .NET development environments for the web get better.
It is the same with the desktop. Would I rewrite a major Win32 Delphi
application in .NET? Would it run any faster, do anything more, or offer
enough advantages to do so? Likely not. However, if I was writing a new
applications is there any reason not to go .NET? Some technical ones, but
these appear less and less over time.
Microsoft is honestly a victim of its own success. In switching from Win16
to Win32 there are a lot of compelling reasons to do so... regardless of the
cost. Stablity, features, performance, etc. were all important. With .NET
there are reasons, it just is that they are not compelling. However, over
time, the reasons for not writing something new in .NET aren't there either.
Thanks,
Brett
.
