I use both BDS2006 and vs regularly. VS works fine and has *never*
crashed on me. BDS2006 repeatedly hangs in each and every session and
I have lost hours of work.
BDS2006 is amateur hour and should not be used in a production
environment.
I'm sorry you're having such trouble with BDS 2006, but clearly most
people are not and most have been very positive about the dramatically
better quality of this release - even some that were previously very down
on Borland. What have you tried so far to fix it? Have you installed the
updates? Have you tried to re-install? Are there *specific* things you can
do to reproduce the hangs?
BDS2006 springs memory leaks are crashes sporatically. It has been
recommended that I should buy a product like VMWare/VPC/Parallels
and "test" this IDE in a VM to make sure it's not my computer. There is
word that people have been having problems that are associated with their
hardware/software setup on their computer. It was brought to my attention
that I may be having these problems, despite running a plethora of other
development tools on this machine, which is solely for development purposes.
BCB4, BCB6, VS6, VS2003, VS2005, NetBeans, and a number of other
tools run as expected. This person who told me this said it may very well
be
a bug in Windows(R) that is making the IDE unstable.
Things I have done to narrow it down to this product, and not my computer:
[Ref. I have a Ghost image of my bare install, I reformat and reinstall
everything every 4-5 months.]
I spent 7 hours one day testing this... Here are the steps that I've taken:
1. Restore Windows from Ghost image. Install BDS2006 first, no updates.
--> Crash and burn
2. Restore Windows from Ghost Image. Install BDS2006 + Update 1.
--> Crash and burn
3. Restore Windows from Ghost Image. Install BDS2006 + Update 1,
then install Update 2 over Update 1 (yes, I know they're cumulative, but
I'm trying to narrow this down so all options should be excersized.)
--> Crash and burn
4. Restore Windows from Ghost Image. Install BDS2006 + Update 2.
--> Crash and burn
5. Restore Windows from Ghost Image. Install all my other software,
including but not limited to all other development tools MINUS BDS2006.
--> Wait for Update 8
6.
Borland Developer Studio 2006 Professional ($1,090.00)
Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Professional ($799.00)
* Very much enjoying learning VB.NET ATM, life couldn't be any betta.
Nate.
P.S. Not to sound b*tchy, but *certain people's* faux optimism regarding
this product is really shoving huge salt rocks into my open wounds.
