Bit of a long story, but it is to do with the way PCs use the upper range of
memory address space for BIOS functions, thus making them unavailable to the
OS. The problem is inherent to the PC but can be overcome by remapping
addresses to beyond the first 4GB. The Intel board I use does not do this,
and in addition its approach to the whole problem appears to be particularly
crude - if you install 4GB RAM, only 3GB is actually used.
