Re: Anyone worked with cross-browser plugins?

Did you mean to say the published specification is incomplete and not
guaranteed to work with the Windows version? If that's what you meant,
may I ask where'd you get that information?

COM is known for being insecure. Most of the Windows exploits are due
to COM.

I'd disagree. Many Windows exploits are due to RPC. But any exploits
that are "due" to COM are actually running code locally within the
current user's security context. Anyone who allows a COM object to be
installed and executed without knowing what the object does is simply
asking for problems.

Mozilla uses XUL, because it is based on the W3C standards for
XML/XUL.

Mozilla uses XUL because the Mozilla group wrote XUL. The same reason
that Microsoft uses COM. And the same reason Microsoft will use XAML
for WPF applications.

MS doesn't want to use anything that is XPlatform, which is
why they don't offer anything XPlatform, period!

They offer lots for XPlatform because they've created several
specifications that they have opened to the community. Just because
other vendors choose not to use these standards, doesn't mean that they
don't offer anything XPlatform.

MS itself knows COM is useless for Internet/Extranet development,
which is why they are moving to replace it, themselves. [...]
MS is moving to XAML.

XAML is used to describe the visual appearance and layout of forms and
components on a form. There is no executable code in XAML, like there
is in COM.

Why not XML?

XAML is based on XML, just as XUL is:

"XAML is a declarative XML-based language optimized for describing
graphically rich visual user interfaces, [..] XUL and UIML are other
examples of XML-based user interface languages"

MS does not want to use anything that offers XPlatform, period. This
is a major reason MS is losing the developers around the world.

Who created XMLHTTPRequest? And what is XMLHTTPRequest used for today?

Microsoft created it. And it's required for AJAX. Is Microsoft the
only vendor offering/supporting AJAX development today?

I strongly disagree that Microsoft is losing developers because of
Microsoft's lack of XPlatform, because XPlatform developers were never
using Microsoft tools to begin with.

I looked at your OpenGroup link and the price tag for a developers
license of COM on Unix was 35,000.00. Would I (would anyone) pay 35K
to develop COM on Unix? Give you only one guess :).

You are referring to a product, named COMsource, which implements COM
"for Solaris, Tru64 UNIX and Other Platforms". That has nothing to do
with COM as an Open Standard. There are no fees to implement COM on
any platform.

Why do you think that there are hundreds of free
extensions for Firefox/Mozilla?

http://www.ieaddons.com/ has 487 extensions for IE. Does Mozilla have
more? Probably. The idea of writing one extension that works on
browsers on multiple platforms is certainly appealing. If I wrote
browser extensions, I'd probably write for Firefox instead of IE. But
you seem to imply that there are only a handful of extensions for IE.

Why is MS adopting a new MS standard
for the creation of plugins and extensions themselves?

And what standard is MS adopting for the creation of plugins and
extensions for Internet Explorer? Do you have a reference?
