Well, that's not my experience. Being too specialised means you may be a sheep with no grass to eat (this metaphor is getting stretched very thin <g>).
But being not specialized enough means you're just a replaceable part, that can be disposed of at will, and be replaced by a cheaper, younger, more productive part :)
Also, aiming for "jack of all trades master of none" only leads to grunt work, varied grunt work maybe, but grunt work still.
If you want to get above grunt work, you need to be better at something than the rest of the grunts around you... ie. specialize, in domain expertise, management, whatever. Then you'll be the one taking the "fun" parts of a job away from the grunts, leaving them to do the "boring" stuff that all unspecialized grunts can handle ;)
