This quote is quite interesting:
"As for some more long-term developments, I obviously cannot be specific. I can say that there is some thought and research going into how Delphi, the language, can take advantage of the latest surge of multi-core processors. ..... This presents some interesting challenges and opportunities for tools vendors. With the advent of multi-CPU systems now showing up on people?s laps, people are still expecting a performance boost. Rather than simply cranking up the rate at which a CPU can crunch through an application, they can now crunch through more than one section of the same application at the same time. This increases the need for the average developer to be become more adept at writing multi-threaded applications. What if the compiler and the libraries made this easier and more accessible? It is these kinds of questions we ask ourselves everyday."
Not long ago(january-february ish I think), I asked this very question at the OCDUG, John Kaster replied that this question is raised about once a year, and gave the overall impression that Devco did not see this as a productive avenue. The context of the discussion was what can Devco do to be more competitive, is there a "killer app" out there. My postion then and now is to get on the Multi-core bandwagon and give us the tools to be productive in this environment. Make multi-threaded RAD easy! I certainly hope that as Allen's comments indicate, Devco will bring innovation to multi-core(threaded) programming.
