It is a Beta and from what I have heard it contains a whole lot
of debug code.
I doubt it. Beta users aren't going to be using the kernal
debugger. Our betas are built in release mode. OTOH, there may
be a lot of stuff on the DVD that doesn't get installed by
default. If you've ever built a VC++ app in debug and release
modes you'd see a 5:1 or even worse performance degradation when
built in debug.
It took a really long time to install. Also (yeah, I'm an old
dog) I don't care for all of the round buttons and such. I can
see all of those CPU cycles being wasted. I set the GUI up for
'classic'. Being the old dog, I like the looks better and I'm
sure I'm wasting less CPU.
I haven't tried to install much of anything yet. I still have to
get the box on the domain. I'll probably install BCB5 (I already
said I'm an old dog) and VS 2005 on it, along with our source
base and see how it does.
Overall, it's not really what I'm looking for. I develop
software; code, build, run and debug. Rinse and repeat. I'm not
interested in playing MP3's, viewing pictures and sending them to
my friends, etc. It looks like the latter is what Vista was
designed for. Heck, if I could get a 64 bit MS DOS 3.1 ...
