Yawn. Almost fell asleep reading the roadmap featuring all those things I've
been using with Visual Studio for almost half a year now.... generics,
partial classes, asp.net 2.0, compact framework, support for Microsoft's
latest greatest framework, blah blah...
IMO, DevCo is going to have an uphill battle in the .NET space. I think
they have to have a .NET story, but their core of the strategy for .NET
revolves around two things: VCL.NET and ECO.
I'm not sure they are significant enough to win over VS.NET users given
the amount of work they have to do simply to keep up with .NET (i.e.
"albatross"). Also, if they want to have a fighting chance at all in
..NET, it's essential to keep pace with framework updates. The lag for
2.0 support is *unacceptable* and I think they know it.
I can get most of this stuff for free by downloading VS-Express - NOW.
That's exactly right.
Anyway, at least native 64 bit and better native Unicode support doesn't
sound too bad.
Sure...but I think about how far along they'd be if they prioritized
this along side .NET development or were given the resources to pursue
native 64 bit stuff simultaneously. I'm hopeful that DevCo will do much
better in this area.
So here is how I would write the roadmap (since I normally speak german,
please excuse my grammatical blunders).
I'm with you on these items except:
C++ and Delphi in one productive IDE! Best and fastest C++ compiler around!
I personally never understood the C++ Builder market, so my comments
might be completely crazy. But IMO, Borland's C++ compiler is another
albatross to enable VCL for C++ guys.
99.9% ANSI compliance!
IMO, this is the way to go for C++ and CBuilderX had the right idea.
I'd like to see this product revived and support the Mozilla platform
rather than wxWidgets or whatever.
CBuilderX for Mozilla would be fantastic.
I hope someone within DevCo is thinking about Mozilla as a serious
platform to build off of and support. I haven't heard anything to
indicate that it's even a glimmer of an idea within DevCo and hope that
it's just because they aren't saying what they're thinking.
TurboRails + AJAX support for super-productive webdevelopment!
I really like Ruby/Rails, IMO the problem with supporting it in BDS is
more of a cultural one.
IMO, traditional Delphi customers will be most comfortable with
Intraweb; ASP.NET is a runner up. The reason is because both are
structured at component based development with tight integration with tools.
I find that Ruby/Rails doesn't insulate the developer from the web
itself (have to deal with HTML/JS and all that stuff). There is a
cultural emphasis on code and frameworks, not tools/IDEs. IMO, this is
why Ruby/Rails really appeals to the Java crowd. It fits the culture
but provides a vastly superior/productive developer experience.
Certainly there will be tools that will target the Ruby/Rails market,
but I think the most successful ones will be ActiveState's Komodo, RDT
and Sapphire in Steel. I currently use Komodo.
