I'm just trying to take one step back - what caused the college to select
that brand in the first place. There can be multiple answers to that but
No buts--there are multiple answers (overdetermination).
Understatement<g>.
A factor I haven't seen raised, for example, is 'sexiness.' Academicians
are
fashion followers as much as anyone else. One could explain the rise of
Pascal as a teaching language by its tie to structured programming--the
'big
answer' of the time. Java similarly was 'designed for OO'--the next big
theoretical wave.
That's one, but don't forget the "multiple answer" issue. I know some profs
who just want to cover the concepts they're targeting and don't care much
about how it's done. That is, the easier it is on them the better. Others
are "relationship" types. They'll go with whoever courts them best.
I audited a course at a local univ a couple of years ago. The guy I took
from had an attitude of "I'm going to cover A, B, and C because that's what
you'll need on your resume to get anywhere. We're going to use D and E for
this course because it works best.
At the most prestigeous schools, teaching the latest and greatest is much
more likely to be seen as important than being a trade school catering to
what businesses think is useful.
I agree, but you don't want to just target the top schools IMHO. You target
some mid level schools and, after their grads kick some prestigeous *** you
go for the gold.
