I fully agree with you from the starting point of what a college is using -
obviously that can bias a student to those brands, and that in turn can
*reinforce what continues* to be used in industry (which is exactly why a
company should want to get their product in use in schools).

I'm just trying to take one step back - what caused the college to select
that brand in the first place. There can be multiple answers to that but
*all* answers presuppose that brand *already* existed and was big enough to
be noticed and considered worthy by the college - IOW, it was recognized and
used in industry already (very unlikely a new start-up company with a
product having a zero track record is going to get that product accepted for
teaching purposes).
