No buts--there are multiple answers (overdetermination).

A factor I haven't seen raised, for example, is 'sexiness.' Academicians are
fashion followers as much as anyone else. One could explain the rise of
Pascal as a teaching language by its tie to structured programming--the 'big
answer' of the time. Java similarly was 'designed for OO'--the next big
theoretical wave.

At the most prestigeous schools, teaching the latest and greatest is much
more likely to be seen as important than being a trade school catering to
what businesses think is useful.
