I'm a real world app developer

Oooh, that phrase always gives me the heebies when I'm going to a new
place. (**All** developers work in the real world - there is no other.) I
often find it used as an excuse for, umm, sub-optimal programming
practices though :-)

I've certainly written some sub-optimal code. The thing is, after 25 or 30
years of developing, expanding, maintaining, refactoring... and reading up
on programming "stuff" I've sorta figured out a few things (for me anyway).

As it turns out, application domain
knowledge is nearly as important.

Perhaps, but you can't expect that to be taught to them at university :-)

Nope, but hiring them with prior experience in a field ain't a bad
move<vbg>.

Like I said, the idea that you will ever be able to recruit new graduates
perfectly trained for one specific company is completely unrealistic.

I agree.
