IMNSHO, for large, Enterprise level applications, not nearly enough time. Not because the changes are so involved that they couldn't be accomplished. But because Microsoft is not the only software company with product milestones, scheduled releases, and established customer expectations. (However, Microsoft doesn't mind breaking those expectations.)
We produce one, maybe two, new versions a year. We've been working on the next new version for six months now, with another 3 months of development scheduled. This version is a MAJOR enhancement over the last version and is expected to "bake" in alphi/beta testing for a good while. By then, Vista will be out.
Eexpecting our company to make product changes based on a Logo specification that was published in May is a joke. Albiet not a very funny one.
But I envisage there will be quite a few who will want their existing
apps to run without a hitch on Vista even if it means making some changes.
I agree. But for us, it is too late for that. At this point, I don't envision our application to work under Vista until Q2 of 2007, at the earliest. (At least we'll have SQL 2005 compatibility in this next release.)
