Well that's an extreme case where that particular vendors appeared to be
intentionally taking advantage of the situation. It happens non-maliciously
too. Look at Jake's case with DevEx. Very reputable company with great
components and service. They updated their grid components and don't offer
upgrades for older versions that will work with D2006. If he wants to use
D2006 to maintain old apps, he has to upgrade the components, replace all
the old components with the new versions in D7 (because he won't be able to
even open the forms in D2006), and then upgrade to D2006. Even if the
component upgrade was free, there is still a considerable cost involved.

Anyhow, I don't know if it's technically feasible, but it's gotta be worth
considering that some portion of DevCo's income is at the mercy of component
vendors.

Sounds to me this is a problem with the particular vendor not
necessarily a technical problem that DevCo should try to solve.
