even open the forms in D2006), and then upgrade to D2006. Even if the
component upgrade was free, there is still a considerable cost involved.
That's exactly right, so the point is that backward compatibility of
DCU's will only help save the cost of money, not the other associated
costs. That's part of my point. In my experience, the cost that is the
least important is the money itself.
Why are you ignoring the cost of labor to upgrade? If the dcu's/bpl's were
usable with new version of Delphi, both the material and labor to upgrade
Delphi would be reduced, no?
If a company is unwilling to spend $500 per developer on component
upgrades; I'd hate to see what they're paying the developer in the first
place.
Or development costs are a large portion of total costs and if they're going
to spend $500 per developer plus the time required, they would expect to
reap some benefit to offset the cost.
As a hobbyist, there's more of a justification, but I personally think
if the component is worth buying in the first place, it's worth buying
the source code edition. It's also worth upgrading if the upgrade of
BDS itself is worth it.
Agreed. If possible, I will never again buy or recommend a component that
doesn't have complete source code.
I believe DevCo should focus on is making the upgrade of BDS undeniably
worth it.
They can rub their stomachs and pat their heads at the same time, as long as
they don't try to pee and sneeze.
It's a double-edged sword. One of the appeals of Delphi IMO is its
third party marketplace.
I agree and one of the factors to consider is the effect a decision would
have on that market. Looks like one of our major differences is that you
believe the 3rd party market is too fragile to cope with this and I just
think it's worth considering.
