I hear what you are saying vis a vis D7 to D2006 changes; and I am glad to
hear it.. But, If you are saying that you will never need to make changes
to the the compiler that impact existing VCL code, because you have
implemented the needed insulation in the architecture then I'll need to
see a little more time pass (versions released) to verify that. For
instance, I anticipate significant tweaks to my code wth the 64-bit
compiler and VCL. If you are saying this won't be that case, then my hats
off to you.
We are *definately* working to prepare VCL for 64bit. The good thing is
that a lot of the work needed to do this is going to be done in VCL/.NET
since, as it turns out, requires some changes to allow the framework to
properly "float" to the correct bitness at run-time. There will be cases
where you can't run your VCL/.NET (and in the future VCL/WinXX) application
on 64bit since there may be some DLL or inprocess COM server on which the
application depends that are still only 32bit. However the core framework
and components *should* be able to properly float (or recompile) to the
correct bitness.
What this tells me is that the Compiler/VCL is truly becoming portable,
and perhaps we could see another stab at the Linux market in my life
time....
I will never say never... however I can say that at least for the current
roadmap, re-entering the Linux market is still in "wait and see" status. I,
too, would like to do something there if only to satisfy my own personal
geekdom :-). At the same time I also like the idea of creating the best
Windows developer tool.
