Right now, C# is the best damn .NET language.
just as Delphi + VCL was (in my opinion) the best damn
framework for Windows development.
Agreed.
There are compatibility reasons
that it's good to have full C# abilities, but if you look at this from
a competitive standpoint, it's not what's going to gain you customers.
It would help if BDS had full C# capabilities. ;)
You have to make your OWN product and sell it and compete with it. You
cannot be a clone and compete with Microsoft. And if you're going to
go the route of 'value-added' to C#, you may as well dump the IDE
business and make VS.NET add-ins. There's little argument for a
completely separate, premium priced IDE.
This is where I disagree with you. There's no reason why BDS can't
compete effectively with C# for .NET development.
Does what I'm saying involve risk? Absolutely. But I contend you'll
die sooner offering a 'me-too' IDE for C# than you will developing a
competing environment with its own advantages.
But that's just it, I think you can offer a competitive IDE supporting
the same language to compete against VS.NET.
I think DevCo should not worry about distinguishing their product by a
different language and framework in the .NET space. It's a mistake to
believe that Delphi the language is more marketable than C# the language.
DevCo can compete if they offer more things like ECO that make
development significantly easier. They can create a better development
experience in less sexy ways like improving the code writing process
through code templates, etc. These are the ways in which they can
compete IMO.
And yes, that means
VCL.NET has to have serious investment in it that makes it BETTER than
FCL in every way.
I can't fathom how this would be the case even with significant investment.
e.g. they are finally more or less DONE with the hard work of building
the next gen IDE framework. That excruciatingly difficult final 20% is
what has taken 2 versions to get right, and easily cost as much in
terms of resource investment as the first 80% that was done in the D8
time frame.
We'll see in Highlander.
I see the whole idea of dumping VCL.NET and trying to look like
Microsoft as being a suicide pact.
Who said anything about looking like MS?
You either deserve to be in
business as a competitor or you don't. If DevCo wants to sell their
own IDE and language they need to bet the farm on it and let the chips
fall where they may.
I agree.
If not, then we're all just hanging on to Delphi
and its IDE for legacy/sentimental reasons and we should face reality
and leave.
No, I think what the Delphi community wants is to use the best
development tools. I personally don't see Win32 as legacy, but
apparently you do. Delphi is the best Win32 development tool.
Regardless, the problem in the .NET space is that I don't think DevCo is
offering the best tool for .NET development.
As the saying goes: "Go big or go home".
I wouldn't be quoting that guy, but that's fine if you want to.
But let's just wait for Highlander ok? I've grown weary of this thread.
