Thanks for the links. Brian has also given me an excellent reference
into what .NET 3.0 consists of.
As a database guy you may find this link of interest:

ADO.NET vNext: The Entity Framework, LINQ and more
I thought we were expressly talking about .NET 3.0 here, and I'm pretty
sure I saw that LINQ is not going to be included (shipping with Orcas,
I believe).
Since .NET 2.0 is going to be an integral part of .NET 3.0 it doesn't
need a new compiler but there are new compiler for WinFX.
Which is why I had my initial impression that .NET 3.0 may be easily
consumable by Highlander users. It seems that this may not be the case,
if large components require a design-time experience, and this
experience requires Visual Studio to work.
But don't forget there's a heckava lot more to WinFX than just WPF
which has been the focus of all the attention here on this newsgroup.
Well that was kind of the guts of my point. WPF would almost
undoubtably require some kind of design-time support. But I figure
there will still be plenty of other .NET 3.0 components which will be
of benefit to, and easily consumable by, Highlander developers.
Sorry, I'm not going to engage in a BDS with VCL vs. Visual Studio
with NET - "my dad can whip you dad" kind of discussion.<g>
That wasn't the point I was trying to make.
As someone who has used Delphi versions 2 to 2006, VS 6, VS2003 and
VS2005, I can totally understand why VS6 users were a lot more excited
about the move to .NET (and the accompanying IDE) than Delphi users
were. I still believe there are benefits to be gained from .NET for
Delphi developers, but I don't think the gains are anywhere near as
strong. I'd even suggest that Delphi Win32 would be a better choice for
many desktop Delphi developers. Like I said elsewhere in this thread, I
am partial to using .NET for desktop apps, but this is only because of
ECO. Take ECO out of the equation, then choosing Delphi Win32 for
client apps is a no brainer for me.
Heck, in some areas it may even seem like a step backwards to Delphi
developers. Having designer generated code intermingled with user
created application code comes to mind here. Sure, C# partial classes
help here, but they're providing a solution to a problem that should
have never been created, IMHO.
None of that takes away from the fact that the .NET framework does
provide a great foundation for application development, and I don't
hesitate to use it for both desktop and web based applications.
