Re: DevCo: A look from outside the window.

lot of good and true things
But one major drawback is, you give data and control out of your hands.
Corporations, Universities and the likes can build up such as system, but I
don't see them using external servers that aren't under their control. Employees
can care less about other people on the server having access to their data, as
anyway it should be non-personal data. Here it is in the best interest of the
company to secure data from access to other parties.
However usual end-users would have to rely on unknown people maintaing a server,
exposing a lot of private information to total strangers. There is the security
risk; but more importantly can you trust those people and that they don't abuse
their power?
I wouldn't be willing to give all my data and control out of my hands, what
software I am allowed to use and what not.
I want as much freedom as possible and I really think this is a serious threat.

Then performance wise, just think about those huge amount of data you would have
to transfer for interactive multimedia apps. Long distance communication can
never reach the speed and responsiveness of local communication (processor to
memory to graphicscard). And word processors aren't the only desktop apps that
don't fit well in a browser: Photo editing, music composing or 3d rendering...
Flexibility is also lost, the server has to be one fits all, no customization
and again
you depend on others when they will upgrade their machines.

I think it is good and important to keep the freedom to choose and use the right
method depending on the app.
A browser replacing the desktop that would have to asks the server if I can move
the icon and where I can drop it is just ridiculous.
You will have some local processing, and that is the remote desktop, no need for
a browser here.

SaaS has advantages but please don't try to fit everyone and everything in this
paradigm.
