My point is:
Since the internet became common, abuse using the internet is also common.
Having more and more data go over the internet is always a threat, your
server-provider might be using private data without you noticing it (who
guarantees that they can be trusted?). If you have your data on a PC that is not
connected to the internet data theft is much more difficult.

Yes, that is one way to handle it - but how many PCs are there any more that are not connected to the Internet?

The reason why most companies keep their networks as closed as possible is that they have their confidential data in their users PCs, which they cannot guarantee to be secured. Still viruses can enter these PCs and spread the data to the world, if you do not actively work against such a threat.

On the other hand, your employees can take the material out of the company at any time, without you knowing anything about it.

If you consider a remote system which can only be used by valid users and applications, over secure connections, it becomes less probable that the data will end up to third parties by accident.

It is like passing around a package with some valueable content. The package may
be well secured, so it may be hard to open it and steal the content, but in the
first place this package shouldn't be accessible to the public.
In German we say: "Gelegenheit macht Diebe", meaning "Opportunity creates
thieves".

Yes, I've noticed that in Germany people are usually very concerned about confidentiality.
