Re: Registration problems (just a rant)

Let me give a different perspective:
The more expensive your software is, the LESS likely it will be to be
pirated. Something that costs $19.99 just doesn't prick the conscience of
the average Joe. But $1999.00 does.

Our company sells software that costs from $11,000 to over $100,000 per
copy. We ship the full unimpaired uncrippled commercial software to ANY
prospect that asks for it. As far as we can tell, we have never experienced
a piracy event. In addition, some sales require monthly royalty payments
based on self-reporting of user counts. We stress to customers that we are
completely naked and that if they want to lie they can, but we expect them
to just be honest, report the true counts, and remit the monthly payment.

You would be floored at the tremendous goodwill that this relaxed approach
generates.

I am well aware that a $19 product would not be appropriate for this model.
However, I think the DevCo software is. Here's another trick I would
suggest: charge for trial activation. Charge $1 per day for all days > 10
days. The first 10 days are free, so if you want thirtyu days, it'll cost
you $20. We'll credit that to a purchase. What happens in that scenario is
that people feel an urgency to p[ut the software quickly through a true eval
process, plus they are "invested" in the product already. I'd strongly
suggest giving it a whirl.
