Come on, how many users do that?
How many users backup their files at all?
Your application could easily do it as a menu option. Or you could provide shortcut on the Start Menu that simply launches a batch file.
And that backup, if you didn't have a specific registry backup for your
particular application,
If I'm understanding you correctly, this isn't an argument. Because I was saying that it is easy to create a specific registry backup for your particular application. And restoring can be either another batch file with command line options to regedit or simply double-clicking the backup. It's a .reg file that causes regedit to launch and prompt the user whether to import into the registry.
Remote Registry Service is a life-saver because the registry
is such a life-threatening point of fragility...
Ok, I can't argue with that. I agree 100%.
with Remote Registry, it's a cumbersome, error-prone hell.
I still don't agree with that. I can connect to multiple remote registries at the same time, and easily export/import registry branches between them. It's not quite as convenient as copy/paste, but it's no more error-prone or hellish than file administration.
Once again, I /hate/ the registry, particularly for anything application specific. But I've learned how to work with it efficiently and safely, because frankly I don't have a choice. Except with my own applications, of course.
