I'd like to be able to customize the highlighting and display logic for
newsgroup posts, being able to expand/collapse information that's
displayed in it, and have additional navigation.
ok, i suppose if you consider picking of custom colors or customization of a toolbar "form design" then you may me right. i personally don't, and i and see very little resemblance between - say - the Office toolbar customizer or Thunderbird's display options on one hand, and the Delphi or Windows Forms form designer on the other.
I stand by saying that for next to none of the applications i use i can see a use for an embedded option top redesign the forms, in that sense.
Yes, almost all of those applications would greatly benefit from
allowing the user to customize their appearance, and add annotations
and custom treaments to the information presented in the application.
You're switching topics in mid-discussion here - i never talked about customizing appearance or controlling data presentation.
