So in a case of DevCo spin-off, even though I am glad to see changes in
attitude of DevRel and R&D members I have no "expectations" for the process
itself. It is life and many things could go wrong (did you heard about
Amaranth Advisors story last week? Company lost 4.5B$ (~50%) of assets in
the mater of the week (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06263/723449-28.stm).
Hedge funds have short lifespans, because luck always runs out, given enough
time. I know that hedge fund managers and founders think it is not just luck
that got them where they are, but I think that is just their ego talking. It is
not necessarily just "stupid decisions" that lead to product declines. Often it
is simply market movements, which by the nature of rational expectations, are
almost always unpredictable. Back when Visual Cafe was king who could have
predicted that it would in just a few short years end up as an unwanted
appendage to a buyout made by Borland, which would itself then see it's number
one Java tool undermined by a free IDE?
Capitalism is a very dynamic process, which is buffeted by the Schumpeterian
"gale of creative destruction". Products rise, plateau and fall, but not in
very predictable patterns.
