Unfortunately, I think this is an external symptom of the internal
schism that seems to have developed inside the Vista project. With all
the resignations and reapointments, it's clear all kinds of power plays
have been going on between teams. My fear is that one such power play
has been between the usability team and the flashy graphic designers. I
think the latter were given an inappropriate amount of influence by
someone upstairs who decided early on that a very flashy-looking ui was
a top priority both for keeping up with OSX and for squashing Linux.
This is sad, because Microsoft's usability work has in the past been
innovative and very solid. They are huge R&D investors in usability but
they seem to have really lost touch with the ideals of usability with
Vista.
