THIS is what DevCo's marketing needs to focus on IMHO. I'd love to
see a list of features that people find superior in BDS over D7.

I posted a brief list earlier - and that was also one of my major
contentions is that the points being chosen to fight over are the wrong
ones. If you want to show off Delphi - choose things that are truly
better - not simply things you are used to and find foreign in .NET.
Thats not going to fly with those who are experienced in .NET.

So the quick list off the top of my head?

-Native compilation - for shipping to the world of unknown, no
installation of framework. Can run off CD, USB and more.

-Most of the VCL form designers and things like docking etc I much
prefer. Although some of the stuff they added in VS 2005/2.0 is pretty
cool, but doesnt replace the "base" stuff I miss in VCL and could
easily be added as well.

-Things like action lists.

And so on - in short I love .NET. And for .NET its a no brainer, its
Visual Studio. But for any GUI work, I find WinForms in VS a PITA
compared to Delphi. Although WinForms in Delphi is nearly useless on
the other hand. VCL.NET in Delphi is great - but it doesnt play well
with many .NET things. Cant handle .NET controls, needs funky adapters
to get to ADO.NET etc. The probelm with using VCL.NET for forms is that
you are foreigner - its not as bad as using ActiveX's was, but it has
a lot of drawbacks.

-Indy - The socket stuff in .NET is very basic and limited to very few
protocols. Of course there is a Indy C# port now - because of all the
problems with exporting to .NET a port is really teh only option. And
yes the Indy team knows what they are doing and has been down many
paths and even made things work in Delphi8 of all things. ;( I've been
through two MASSIVE ports from VCL to VCL.NET and trying to export both
to FCL users - The Indy and IntraWeb teams contain the experts here.

-The community - actually hack that. After returning most of its gone,
and much of what is left (albeit not all) are defending Delphi at all
costs as if its some shrine and you cannot speak about its holes. The
other part (lets be optimistic and say half) thats left and open is
consdiering leaving and sitting on the fence. The community I guess is
still here - but IMO the health condition is critical and I dont see
the right steps being take here. Rebuf me all you want, but that was my
job at Microsoft, working with communities. They are very different
over there and when I first went I couldnt stop talking about how many
things were done so much better in the Borland world in the community
space. Then I return (but still active in the MS commuity as well) to
find this horror of state. Members of TeamB (I'm not classifying all -
and it certainly does not extend to even a majority of them) attacking
others, spreading disinformation and more. There have been of course
always people upset at TeamB before - but I've never seen it like this
before. And what really opened my eyes was when I typed in a few
members names in Google and saw some of the things and people that have
left because of such actions in the year to 18 months I was absent.
This is not the time - TeamB should be building communities, not
ripping them apart. Again - this is not all of TeamB - but there are
enough members to dirty the name. What about me? Well I'm not TeamB am
I? And I don't work for Borland, or Microsoft.
